The Review on Ping G15 Drivers Part A

The Review on Ping G15 Drivers Part A

Among the giants of the golf industry, PING Golf has always remained one of the quietest in the business. You never see commercials on TV. They only have a select number of pros which they endorse. They rarely even release new clubs. It seems like the word “hype” just isn’t a part of  PING’s vocabulary. But something felt different when  PING  announced it would release two entirely new lines of clubs. PING actually seemed excited. In fact, PING was going out of their way to tell anyone and everyone that would listen that its new clubs had monumental improvements. Even if you didn’t like  PINGs in the past, you start to wonder, what did they come up with? After putting the driver through a full battery of tests it has certainly made an impression on me.

Design and Technology

Like its predecessor, the G15 is a 460cc titanium driver meant for golfers seeking maximum forgiveness. This is where the similarities end, however.  The  G15 is probably the most forgiving driver – on all types of mis-hit – that  PING has ever created. The G15 has numerous technological improvements over the G10. The G15 attains a higher MOI by lengthening the head from front to back. Additionally, a 7% larger face increases ball speed and provides consistency across the entire hitting surface. Lastly, weight savings from the ultra thin crown are positioned as an external sole weight to optimize the center of gravity for higher trajectories and reduced spin.

Weight saved by using an ultra-thin crown aids the forgiveness with unique sole weighting. The improvements don’t end at the clubhead though. The new PING TFC 149D shaft allows for a five gram increase in head mass without increasing swingweight or overall weight. All of these seemingly small changes should result in higher ball speeds and an increase in MOI.

Esthetics

I would count myself among one of the many golfers who have loved the way that PINGs feel but were less than inspired by their looks (remember the  PING TiSi, anyone?). With the G15, and for the first time,  PING’s esthetics may have matched their technology.

Although  PING did not change the crown finish for the G15, there are two noticeable differences between the  PINGG15 and G10 at address. First,  PING abandoned the half moon alignment aid of the G10 in favor of a sleek yet subtle red arrow which first appeared on the  PING Rapture. Second, lengthening the club from front to back to increase MOI makes the driver look more triangular in shape than the G10. Overall, I found the simplicity of the new look crown to be improvements over the G10.

The sole of the G15 is what I would consider among  PING ‘s greatest improvements. The chrome treatment on the sole isn’t new but the technical changes gave PING the ability to make significant esthetic changes. Rather than rubbing your face in the fact that there is a ton of new technology,  PING ‘s red, black and chrome paint treatment highlights the technology while remaining understated. Esthetically, the hitting area remained nearly identical to the G10 with white groves and a v-shaped grooveless sweet spot. The only difference, for which you would have to be looking to notice, is a sightly larger face.

With a black crown, a silver, black and red sole,  PING chose to continue the color scheme to their shafts. While there is a slight difference in color between the two stock shafts both shafts are shades of red and grey.

Although the word classic never came to mind when I was looking at the PING, the engineers’ new appreciation of subtlety has made the  PING Golf a much cleaner and simpler looking club. Personally, I find this to be a dramatic improvement.

The Longest Hitting Drivers in Golf

The Longest Hitting Drivers in Golf

What is the longest hitting driver in golf? All the major golf manufacturers claim they make the longest hitting driver. The Internet is filled with all sorts of ads about finding the driver with the most distance off the tee. Even your local paper golfing magazine has features about special products that guarantee you can drive like a champion. So, what’s the great secret?

The answer may already be in your bag or as close as your golf professional or online Internet
golfing store.

But, before dashing off to purchase that magical driver, lets look at what really makes drives go
long and straight.

A longer club shaft
Conventional wisdom suggests that a driver with a loner shaft will hit a golf ball farther
than a shorter shafted golf driver.

The pun is intended. The bad news is that not everyone can hit a long shaft driver and the results can often be disappointing. Tests have shown that if a golf ball is mis-hit by as little as ½ inch, driving distance can be reduced by as much as 20 yards. The more you miss the sweet spot, the shorter the drives. And we’re talking about distance, not accuracy. Unless you are a low handicap golfer, by itself, a longer shaft could, in fact, hurt your distance off the tee.

Lighter club
It certainly helps, but it depends where the weight is removed. The theory is that the lighter the club, the faster the swing. The faster you swing your driver, the farther the golf ball flies down the fairway. Since the shaft has the most weight, that is the best place to remove club weight in order to speed up the swing. Here is where shaft flexibility enters the picture. If the driver’s shaft is too stiff, a lighter shaft weight may cause your shot to be short and a bit to the right. If you want to lighten the shaft, make sure shaft flexibility is part of your calculations.

More loft
Conventional wisdom also weighs in on loft. Simply put, the slower your swing speed, the higher the required trajectory necessary to keep the ball in the air. Check this out by comparing the distance with a three wood, versus the driver. If they are about the same, a common occurrence, consider a driver with a little more loft with the CG (center of gravity) slightly back from the club face.

Clubhead Design
This is where modern technology and strong clubhead design can really help the average golfer and is the place where technology has really helped long hitting drivers. Most of the above techniques work great if the ball is struck directly on the sweet spot. Unfortunately, only PGA golfers do that almost every time. Perimeter weighted clubs like the Callaway Big Bertha and drivers from Ping (who pioneered the technology), King Cobra and TaylorMade have become extremely popular driving companions for golfers, worldwide.

The Grip
The grip is one of the most overlooked aspects when choosing a driver, but one of the most important. This is the connection for you to the club and if everything isn’t comfortable and natural, your swing, and the resulting distance off the tee, hasn’t a chance.

The size of the grip is totally dependent on the size of your hands. The bigger the hands, the thicker the grip. If the grip is uncomfortable or irritates your hands, change it quickly. This is where totally comfortable is really good.

Believe it or not, grip weight is also a distance factor. A light grip increases the relative weight of the club head. This is good for players with good strong swings. A heavier grip decreases the relative weight of the clubhead and makes it feel lighter. This helps the golfer with a slower swing.

There are many answers to the question of what is the longest hitting driver in golf. Almost as many as there are golfers. Modern technology can help you find the best driver for your game. It also wouldn’t hurt to work on your swing so you can take advantage of the advanced weight and flexibility features on the big name clubs. Match your driver to your skills and play within yourself. That old sports saw really fits finding the longest hitting golf driver.

Great Golf Drivers to Improve Your Game

Great Golf Drivers to Improve Your Game

A good hit off of the tee can make or break a game of golf. The greater the distance you can achieve with your first shot, the more precise your follow-up shots can be. Having a driver you feel comfortable and confident with is essential to developing your golf game. A good driver provides you with the power that you need for your initial drive, and offer the stability to ensure a straight hit every time. The best drivers have a high moment of inertia, keeping the driver’s head straight and true throughout your swing and resisting the pull to turn within your grip as your swing approaches the ball.  There are a number of great drivers available to help you improve your drives and take strokes off of your game, each with their own advantages and unique design features.

Adams

One of the best drivers offered by Adams is the Insight Tech A4, available in standard and oversized versions.  The club head is designed so that the majority of its mass is delivered low and to the back of the head, shifting its center of gravity and resulting in an optimal impact to launch the ball.  The intention of this shifted center of gravity is to give the ball a low amount of spin and a high launch, increasing the ball’s maximum carry distance and giving it a decent roll once it lands.

Callaway Golf

Callaway Golf offers several drivers that have received rave reviews such as the Big Bertha Diablo and the Fusion FT-9.  The Big Bertha Diablo is designed with an optimized center of gravity in order to provide a high moment of inertia as well as the famous Hyperbolic Face Technology to increase ball speeds across the face on impact.  The Fusion FT-9 features similar technologies, as well as the unique Fusion and OptiFit System technologies to improve overall club weight distribution and customization to your swing.  Both of these drivers are designed to give you the best height and distance off of the tee to place you right where you want to be on the fairway.

Hippo Golf

The Hex 2 and Hex TX drivers by Hippo Golf are some of the most unique-looking drivers on the market, using a dynamic head design to increase moment of inertia and deliver more powerful, straighter, and longer drives.  The unique head shapes of the Hex 2 and Hex TX are aerodynamically designed in order to reduce drag on the backswing and to adjust the spread of the club’s weight in order to optimize its center of gravity.  This results in a faster swing at impact, transferring more momentum into the ball in order to give it the lift and distance that you desire.  Because of the high moment of inertia, the Hex 2 and Hex TX drivers will hit true in order to ensure maximum control over the direction of the ball.

Ping

The Ping G5 driver uses a newly-designed internal weight distribution in order to adjust the club’s center of gravity and ensure maximum distance for your drives.  The G5 features a 460cc head with improved weight placement over previous Ping drivers, giving you more control over the club during your swing and letting the driver have more forgiveness than some other driver options.  The redistributed weight in the head reduces ball spin, allowing more of the momentum of your drive to be applied to loft and distance.  The G5 also features improved variable face geometry, further refining the head’s center of gravity in order to help you optimize your swing for long drives.

Taylor Made

Taylor Made offers the renowned 2009 Burner driver, a dual-crown driver designed to feature a low center of gravity in order to minimize spin and maximize loft and distance.  The shaft of the club is made using Taylor Made’s patented 49-gram RE*AX SuperFast graphite technology, allowing the flex of the shaft to work with the mass of the head in order to improve moment of inertia and produce greater speeds upon impact.  Everything about the 2009 Burner has been designed to ensure long drives with amazing precision.

Wilson

Drivers such as the Wilson Staff Smooth and the Staff Spine are one of the reasons that Wilson is one of the most trusted and well-known names in golf.  The Staff Smooth is designed to provide you with an increased sweet spot and improved head stability, ensuring you optimal loft potential with every swing.  The Staff Spine features a unique crown superstructure designed to lower the center of gravity and increase the moment of inertia, while incorporating a unique “spine” behind the club face in order to increase swing forgiveness and improve ball speeds.  Both Staff models are designed to reduce your overall strokes and give you more control from the tee.

Ping G10 Golf Series (Ping G10 Drivers, fairway woods, G10 Hybrids )

Ping G10 Golf Series (Ping G10 Drivers, fairway woods, G10 Hybrids )

Ping Golf is ready with its next round of woods and irons: the G10 Metal Wood series includes driver, fairway woods and hybrids; plus there are the G10 Irons. And along with the G10, Ping is also releasing the i10 irons.

The Ping equipment – available beginning Sept. 1 – leads this roundup of new stuff coming to pro shop shelves.

Ping G10 Drivers
With a cast body and fully machined 6-4 titanium face, the Ping G10 Driver has a taller face and a deeper (front to back) crown than previous Ping drivers.

Those elements, along with the driver’s thinner crown and face, compared to previous models, help Ping target the holy grail for driver designers: lower and deeper center of gravity, higher moment of inertia.

Some of the Ping tour pros have already switched to the G10 driver, including Chris DiMarco and Angel Cabrera.

Also available is a G10 Draw version. The draw bias is achieved with a quarter-inch more offset, and an internal weight pad that is positioned farther back and closer to the heel compared to the standard G10 driver.

The standard G10 driver is available in lofts of 7.5, 9, 10.5, 12 and 13.5 degrees; the G10 Draw driver in lofts of 9, 10.5, 12 and 13.5 degrees.

The Ping G10 fairway woods

The Ping G10 fairway woods have lost their skirt. As Ping puts it, these clubs are “engineered with a crown that intersects the sole,” resulting in a skirtless design. That weight savings allows for other tricks by engineers to lower center of gravity and increase MOI.

These fairway woods feature a low-profile head with a shallow face, but a face that is longer heel-to-toe. These elements help the club perform better out of a wider variety of lies. A large weight pad on the sole helps deepen the CG, utilizing weight saved in the crown, face and hosel.

As with the driver, a G10 Draw version is also available. The draw bias is again achieved by moving the hosel forward, creating more offset, while moving the internal weight pad farther back and more toward the heel.

The standard Ping G10 fairway woods are available in lofts of 14, 15.5, 17, 18.5, 21.5 and 24.5 degrees. The Draw version comes in 15.5, 17, 18.5 and 21.5 degrees.

G10 Hybrids
Six lofts designed to replace mid- and long irons are available for the Ping G10 Hybrids, which feature a sloped-crown design from 17-4 stainless steel.
